What’s In A Name

names_of_god_014This Sunday I’m preaching from Isaiah 9:6:

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6

By the use of these names, Isaiah gives us a glimpse of the highly-anticipated Messiah. He prophecies that He will be a Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, an Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace. The Bible uses multiple names for God that help us to understand and know Him more clearly.

What is one or two of your favorite names for God in the Bible?

  1. The name that jumped out to me most on the graphic was “Deliverer.” I love the thoughts that word evokes. It reminds me of the OT Exodus story, but also our exodus story today because of Jesus.

  2. Emmanuel “God with us.”

For me, I think my favorite name for God shifts depending on what I’m going through in life. Today, I especially like the word “Friend.”

  4. If I were a rich man, i would be a nature photographer and travel the world capturing the beauty of god’s creation. Great photography is mostly about capturing light! But the light we most seek to capture is something we call “sweet light”. This is the light at the lower end of the light spectrum and contains red and gold.It is the light most present in the early morning at sunrise and at sunset. Somehow, I connect that beauty with God. He is “the light of the world”.
